JOHN F. SMITH III
Senior Vice President of Grid Performance and Contractor Operations, Duke Energy
John Smith, a native of Philadelphia, holds a master’s degree in business from Eastern University and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Widener University. In 2003, he and his wife, Patti, along with their two children Amanda and Johnny, moved to the Raleigh area from the Southwest.
Smith is currently Senior Vice President of Grid Performance and Contractor Operations at Duke Energy and is based in the North Carolina Regional Headquarters office in downtown Raleigh. He leads the team responsible for designing, building, maintaining and operating the Duke Energy electrical distribution system, which expands across six states and serves 23 million customers. He has over 34 years of experience in the electric utility business, primarily in leadership roles.
John has been an American Red Cross Eastern NC board member since 2013 and is currently on the boards of several utility industry groups, including the SEE. He is a former board member of the Asheville-Buncombe County Economic Development Coalition, chairman and board member of the Pigeon River Foundation, and has held various other community positions throughout his career.
